The Future and Fly Ranch
The Future and Fly Ranch
In 2016, Burning Man Project purchased Fly Ranch, a 3,800-acre property in the Black Rock Desert located 24 miles north of Gerlach, Nevada. While the playa we call home is a barren sprawl, Fly Ranch presents itself as a lush oasis tucked in the high desert valley. Acres of wetlands and dozens of hot and cold springs support a diverse ecosystem for dozens of animal species and more than 140 identifiable types of plants. Rising out of a grassy field of tall reeds is Fly Geyser, a landmark created in 1964 by a geothermal power company through accidental drilling.
Still in its early experimental phase, Fly Ranch is a project seeking to explore the potential of the Burning Man community year-round. It’s a rural incubator for Burning culture to flourish and a catalyst for innovation and creativity. Currently, the Fly is investing in site improvements and infrastructure, expanding community participation, and continuing work with the LAGI (Land Art Generator Initiative) design challenge team winners.
Many groups currently work with Fly Ranch, including Burners Without Borders, Friends of Black Rock High-Rock, Fly Ranch Guardians, Desert Research Institute, Land Art Generator Initiative, and more. Check out the www.flyranch.org to learn more about what’s happening and get involved!,
